Faces of the Palm Beaches: Shawn Woods

Every once in a while you meet someone and as you hear their story you discover that there is so much more to them than you thought.  Shawn is one of those people.  She has had many different positions and adventures.  She speaks with such passion about serving people and using her skills to build amazing businesses and impacting her community.

Q: What community do you represent for the Faces Of?

A:  “TheFacesofthePalmBeaches.com.”

Q: Please tell us about your family.

A: “I was an only child. I grew up in Anaheim, Calif. where I lived with my  grandparents and two uncles. My mom was really young and I really didn’t meet my dad till I was 21. At that time I blew him off. Now, that I am about to turn 50, I realized that I had lost that relationship, so I reached back out to him and will meet with him in April.  I am married to Randy Woods. We have a miniature poodle, named Harper Grace. She is a beautiful ginger color.  Her other middle name is Harper ‘no.'”

Q: From where do most of your clients originate?

A: “So far most of my clients from open houses.”

Q: What is something unique about your community?

A: “Our community is surrounded by water and a large percentage of the homes here have a pier.  Our house is in the village. There are canals around the homes and they can park their boat here and go to from the inter-coastal inlet out to the ocean.”

Q: What are 2-3 of your top 10 favorite movies?

A: “I love ‘Blazing Saddles’ and ‘Friday,’ but ‘Star Wars’ is my forever favorite movie! I played Star Wars when I was young – I was always Princess Leah. The first movie I ever saw was ‘Blazing Saddles,’ I watched it at the drive-in.”

Q: What attracted you to The Faces Of project?

A: “It was an extension of something I was trying to do in my community. It gives me a platform and structure to meet all kinds of interesting people and to be purposeful about meeting people. I am meeting people I would otherwise not know. It gives me away to start conversations and something to talk about with those I meet.”

Q: Who is the most famous person you have met?

A: “I used to work for Wolfgang Puck Restaurant in California and a lot of famous people came in there. At Presidio Social Club, a restaurant in San Francisco where I worked, I was in charge of the sports on TV.  I really hate sports, so I would only play sports if something big was on. When nothing major was on I would play vintage movies. One day I was playing the movie ‘The Jerk.’ We got a call into the restaurant that Bernadette Peters would like to come in and wanted a private table. When she walked in she say that we were playing ‘The Jerk’ and she said ‘Oh my gosh, you are playing my movie!’ She said it was so much fun to make – Steve Martin was so fun. She stood there watching it a crowd came around and listened to everything she was saying. It was so memorable.”

Q: Have you ever shown a house you believe to be haunted?

A: “No, but I have been houses that were haunted.”

Q: What are two things or characteristics that you have that have made you successful in your career?

A: “Integrity and being true to my word.”

Q: What makes you happy?

A: “Being in nature.”

Q: What is the most beautiful place you have been in this world?

A: “I love France, Hawaii, Jamaica and Vancouver.”

Q: What are 2-3 of your favorite books?

A: “‘The Tipping Point’ by Malcolm Gladwell the autobiography of Katherine Graham (she owned Washington post), ‘How to Win Friends and Influence People’ is my current read and love it!”

Q: What else should people know about you?

A: “I am a Feng Shui practitioner. I studied with a master for 12 years. I lived in Hong Kong for a while – I was recruited to move to Hong Kong and open a chain of bridal salons and it lasted 6 months; I was 24 years old.  I also lived in New York and worked at an antique store called Cobwebs. The woman who owned it traveled the world and brought back unique things.  People would rent stuff for movies – I met a lot of famous people there also.”

Q: What was the most favorite thing you have done in your life so far?

A: :Having my first restaurant Mariposa in Winsor, Calif. It had nine tables and it was like having a dinner party every night  We helped put that town on the map.”
